TIPS FOR SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN TATEUCHI
New 1/24/10

Thank you for your flexibility as we learn the most efficient procedures for moving our Ancient China, Silk Road, and Spirit of the Samurai school programs to Tateuchi. We have put together guidelines for Coat Check, escorting students to Tateuchi, and leaving the museum, but as a team you are welcome to adjust as you see fit.

Checking Bags:  Students can not bring backpacks into the galleries. Therefore, all bags will need to be checked into Coat Check. Please remind teachers that they will need to check bags in and out as one class. If they might need a bag during their visit, have them check it independently from the group.

Congestion: While students are using the restroom and checking bags, it is likely that South Court will become very congested. South Court is already the thoroughfare to enter Shanghai, and for the other school programs. To mitigate the congestion, we recommend that you start taking students up to Tateuchi as soon as possible and in 3 smaller groups rather than waiting for the entire group.

Possible Transitions:

  • Going up to Tateuchi/Returning to the Ground Floor
    • You may go up the Loggia stairs or escalator/elevator (3500 lbs. capacity) by the Cafe and walk through the Loggia to the Korea galleries (if Samsung is closed) or through the Japan galleries.
  • Ancient China
    • The group that starts in the Han/Tang gallery can go through the Chinese ceramics gallery (2nd floor) and up the North stairs or main elevator.
    • Other group can go through the Loggia and up the glass elevator or escalator.
  • Spirit of the Samurai
    • There will be a wide entrance into Tateuchi, but to avoid a bottleneck as groups enter and leave, try your best to monitor your timing.
  • Silk Road
    • The group that starts in the Han/Tang gallery can go through the Chinese ceramics gallery (2nd floor) and up the North stairs or main elevator.
    •  The group that starts in the West Asia gallery can go up the escalator.
    • The group that starts in the Southeast Asia gallery can go up the glass elevator.

TIPS FOR TATEUCHI: Suggested Responsibilities

Lead:
Before tour: Determine transition route. Beginning of tour: Ticket, prepare students to have bags and coats ready to check, direct students to restroom and to place bags in laundry bins. Take group up to Tateuchi.

End of the tour: Lead students down to Coat Check and out of the Museum.

Support 1:
Beginning of tour: Retrieve 2-3 bins from Coat Check. Monitor bins. When students are done, turn bins into Coat Check and retrieve a number. Stay on ground floor until all students are done with restroom and Coat Check and escort them to Tateuchi.

End of tour: Retrieve bins from Coat Check, give to teacher, and turn them back into Coat Check when empty. If the group wishes to stay, you may give them the number so they can retrieve their coats upon departure.

Support 2:
Beginning of tour: Start taking any students that are ready up to Tateuchi.

End of tour: Start prepping Tateuchi for next group.
